Pregnancy and the post-partum peroid pose special challenges when it comes to weight management.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology no longer recommend massive amounts of weight gain during pregnancy. They have tamed their recommendations and are much more in tune with other medical groups, although they still seem to set the limits too high.

For most women:
If you are extremely obese (BMI over 40), they recommend not gaining any weight at all, and in fact they recommend losing weight during pregnancy.

If you are obese (BMI 30-39.9), they recommend weight gain of up to 10 pounds.

If you are overweight (BMI 25-29.9), they recommend modest gains of up to 5-20 pounds.

If your in the normal weight range (BMI 18.5 to 24.9), they recommend weight gain of up to 25-30 pounds.

I you are underweight (BMI below 18.5), they recommend gaining as much as 28-40 pounds.

How can I use the C3 Diet during pregnancy?

Before we say anything about dieting, there is one serious health concern. It starts before pregnancy. Make sure you are supplementing with folic acid a month before you decide to get pregnant. This helps reduce spinal cord defects. Most “prenatal” vitamins have folic acid (folate) in in them.

The C3 Diet is high on fruits and vegetables. During pregnancy, you can continue this trend.

Eating small frequent meals throughout the day to avoid the highs and lows in blood sugar levels that will lead to those hypoglycemia cravings.

Stay hydrated. Your urine should be clear to light yellow in color. Hydration will alleviate many of the health risks associated with pregnancy and will keep your stomach feeling full and content.

You have to use the concept of smart snacking. No ice cream or pasta on an unlimited basis. Snack on cheese sticks, almonds, yogurt, apples, bananas, as well as many of the other approved snacks. Go back and reread the C3 Diet chapters with a special emphasis on, “How can I follow this during pregnancy?”

What about after pregnancy?

How can I get back to my original weight? That’s the question that most people ask and want a magical answer. It’s usually followed by, “And I still want to breastfeed.”

You can still lose weight, eat right, and breastfeed. In fact, breastfeeding uses up a lot of mom’s excess stored calories (fat) to help make milk. You can still follow the above C3 Diet principles after giving birth. Pay special attention to hydration. In order to produce milk, you have to be well hydrated. Your body needs the fluids to make milk. If you are dehydrated your milk production (fat burning) process will shut down. Drink more water and you will make more milk (burn more fat).

The C3 Diet adapts to you and your likes and dislikes. Reread the C3 Diet with a special emphasis in your own mind on how you can utilize these techniques in the post-partum period.
