The Body Mass Index tries to determine how much you should weigh for your height.
It’s calculated by taking your weight (mass) and dividing that number by your height squared. That is what gives you your BMI.
Determining your BMI is easy using one of the below formulas. We have an integrated BMI calculator on our website as well. (CardiologyDiet.com) Click on the Tools section and plug in your height and weight.
For example, if you are 5 foot 6 inches tall, that’s 66 inches total. And let’s say you weigh 180 pounds. That gives us:
180 x 703 (a conversion factor to change from American to Metric) = 126,540
Now divide that number by your height squared:
And 66 squared is 4356
And 126540/4356 = 29.04
A BMI of 29 is Overweight and almost Obese.

The Body Mass Index works for all people and all sexes. It tries not to discriminate. Women should be on the lower end of the spectrum around 19-22, while men should be be around 22-24.
